A Glimpse of Winter as Snow Falls in Scarborough

24th Nov 2008

For school-children and visitors to Scarborough hotel accommodation, the weekend’s snowfall meant the chance for some sledging and snowball fun! And, although the beaches, unusually, had coverings of snow, the weather was perfect for surfers, with several making the most of the rough conditions.

Although forecast, Saturday morning’s snow caught many, visitors to Scarborough hotels, and drivers by surprise.

Driving conditions were tricky around some parts of Scarborough, Whitby, Pickering and the North York Moors throughout much of the weekend.

The Met Office had issued a heavy snow warning for North Yorkshire and other parts of the county.

A spokesperson for Scarborough Police told the Scarborough Evening News: “The snow has caused a lot of problems. Luckily the drivers were driving slowly because of the snow so thankfully no-one has been injured.”

Temperatures plunged to below freezing on Saturday but rose on Sunday. For Monday, rain and drizzle are forecast, with milder temperatures and a dry evening.
