North Yorkshire Coast Parks Are Top of the Charts

05th Aug 2010

Parks from the North Yorkshire Coast have all been awarded the Green Flag Awards.

The parks include Scarborough’s Falsgrave Park, Filey’s Glen and Crescent Gardens and Whitby’s Pannett Park.

The Green Flag Awards Scheme recognises and rewards for the best green spaces in the country and is a mark for high standards in a park.

The North Yorkshire Coast parks have received successful awards in the past, with Falsgrave Park winning six awards in a row, Glen and the Crescent winning three successive awards but Whitby’s Pannett Park has won its first award.

Friends of Pannett Park chairman, Cllr Joe Plant, said:

“It’s a fantastic achievement which we hope to repeat in the future.

“I would like to thank all of the people who have put great effort and hard work into the park, especially the hands-on gardeners who have been working all year round.”

Falsgrave Park Chairman Dorothy Russell said.

‘ We are very proud because it’s a joint effort between the friends group, Scarborough Borough Council and the members of the public who visit the park and I would like to thank all of them for their contribution.’
Linda Cooke Friends of Filey Parks Chairman said.

‘ The park has to be up to a certain standard and we’ve made lots of improvements including a new footpath , tree planting and additions to the play area.’

‘Our volunteers have been regularly doing all they can to improve the area, so it’s brilliant to have that recognized a third year in a row.’

The North Yorkshire Coast parks are obviously thriving under great management and this success is an inspiration according to Scarborough Borough Council Parks Manager Roger Burnett.

He said.

‘All of these guys are an inspiration to everyone and achieving this prestigious award signals the very high standards the individual parks are setting.’
