Beached Festival Said to Be Huge Success!

19th Aug 2008

Thousands of music enthusiasts flocked to stay at Scarborough hotels for the eighth annual Beached festival over the weekend to enjoy a host of top talent.
Helmsley rockers One Night Only made a triumphant return to the event in the South Bay, near the Royal Hotel Scarborough, as Saturday’s headline act, and Britpop heroes Dodgy took to the stage last night as headliners.

They were joined by a wealth of up-and-coming names including Imma, The Shaiyans, Heaven’s Basement, Livingston, The Paddingtons, Idiot Savant, Rosie and the Goldbug, Mama Shamone, Flamboyant Bella, The Bookhouse Boys and Natty.

Beached organiser Mike Lynskey told the Scarborough Evening News: “It’s been an ace show and the bands have been great. It’s nice to see bands who are used to doing big gigs coming here and being excited about it all.”

On Saturday the weather ensured a huge turnout from visitors staying at hotels in Scarborough and the beach flocked by thousands of people, of all ages, danced their Saturday night away in the warm night air.

“The atmosphere’s great and I’m having a good time. If I had one criticism it would be that it’d be nice to see more local bands on the bill.”

Yesterday the crowds cheered into the night as the festival drew to a close with headliners Dodgy. During the day hundreds gathered on the beach, getting as close to the stage as they could while others relaxed in deckchairs, and some even danced in the sea as the tide came in.

Seven acts from the Beached Academy kicked off the event on the main stage which was on the South Bay, close to the Luxury Royal Hotel Scarborough, performing tunes they had been working on for five days at the University of Hull’s Scarborough Campus.

Andrea Mohrig, 23, of Esplanade Gardens, was in the audience to see Alex Bailey, who was singing and rapping as part of the Academy’s line-up.

She said: “Free festivals are always good because it’s getting music to the masses and not everyone can get to the big festivals like the V Festival or Leeds Festival.”

Engineer Sharron O’Nions, 45, of North Street, told the Scarborough Evening News: “This event draws people in and puts Scarborough on the map, making us a popular place. It’s good for the young people as well.”
