Buddy Holly Diner set for Scarborough
21st May 2009
Peggy Sue Gerron, the woman who inspired the Buddy Holly hit song and who probably has the most famous girl’s name in rock ‘n’ roll history, is opening a chain of Diners across the world as a tribute to the 1950’s legend.
The 68-year-old from Texan intends to open the first of her Diners in Scarborough after falling in love with the town during a recent visit.
Peggy Sue’s Diner proposals have been given the thumbs-up by Scarborough tourism leaders and Graham North, who is the chairman of Scarborough’s Forum for Tourism, said:
“It is really good to see a new tourism attraction coming to town. The fact it will initially be unique to Scarborough is really good news. It shows what an important tourism resort we have.”
Eddie Blakely who is spokesman for the Scarborough Hospitality Association hopes that the Buddy Holly Diner will attract many visitors to the North Yorkshire coastal town. He said:
“All the Scarborough hotels and guest houses will be delighted to have something as prestigious as Peggy Sue’s first Diner. If she has chosen Scarborough out of all the places in the world, it just goes to show we are already delivering a great tourism package.”
Peggy Sue is currently looking for premises in Scarborough with the hope of opening the Diner in time for September 7 – Buddy Holly’s birthday.
