Scarborough in Running for ‘Great Town Title’
16th Jul 2009
Scarborough is still in the running for another award as it has been short listed as one of three finalists in the Great Town section of the 2010 Urbanism Awards.
As one of 10 finalists originally, judges have been running the rule over Scarborough, Chester and Cambridge before deciding on the winner. The Great Town award is voted for by The Academy of Urbanism, whose members include developers, designers, planners and architects.
Scarborough was awarded finalist status just 24 hours after it won the Enterprising Europe Award in Prague in May and John Thompson, who is the chairman of the Academy of Urbanism, said:
“This was Scarborough’s chance to argue why the title of Great Town of the Year should stay in Yorkshire for a second year running after Richmond’s success.”
The judges, who form the assessment panel, were last week given a guided tour of Scarborough.
Nick Taylor, who is Scarborough’s Urban Renaissance Manager, said:
“It was a very positive couple of days and we were left with quite a good feeling about it all. They saw some great stuff and were genuinely very impressed. I think Scarborough has got a good story to tell and we are hoping to be successful in this.”
The winner of the 2010 Great Town Award will be announced at Church House, Westminster, on November 20.
It is hoped that the recognition in these annual awards will encourage more visitors to stay at Scarborough hotels and visit the many shops and local attractions that the coastal town has to offer.
