Scarborough’s Blue Flag Flies High

Scarborough’s North Bay, where our Clifton Hotel is located, is one of 71 in the country to be awarded a prestigious blue flag award for it’s beach.
Scarborough is delighted that the beach has kept its Blue Flag and in doing so the North Bay beach has achieved the highest quality in water, facilities, safety, environmental education and management.
Keep Britain Tidy, who are responsible for awarding the blue flags, annually judge the country’s beaches in a number of areas and each beach must fulfill 29 criteria to keep its award. As well as the 29 criteria the bathing water must also meet the stringent European Water Quality standards.
Overall the number of blue flags nationally has fallen due to the impact of heavy rainfall and flooding which has lead pollutants to be washed into the sea. As this is the case it is even more of a boost to Scarborough that it’s North Bay has kept it’s award.
Bonnie Purchon, who is a North Bay Councillor, was delighted to hear the news and said:
“It’s absolutely marvellous and I hope we will get it for many years to come. It’s got to be good for the town and the borough.”
The North Bay is a hidden gem that many guests staying at Scarborough hotels often don’t realise is there if the hotel they are staying at is on the South Bay. It is hoped that the awarding of the blue flag will make people realise that another beach exists and that it is well worth a visit when staying in Scarborough.
Brian Bennett, who is Scarborough Council’s head of tourism and culture, said:
“The Beach Management Centre and the high standard of beach cleaning at North Bay underlines that Scarborough is a high quality resort which values its many visitors and residents.”
